All I Want for Christmas Is You

It is a busy afternoon just before Christmas. In a shopping mall, people walk around with bags full of gifts; lights and baubles hang everywhere.

Suddenly, the cheerful beginning of a song rings out from the loudspeakers — a few bells, a piano… and then that powerful voice of Mariah Carey.

It is, of course, All I Want for Christmas Is You.

In a café on the edge of the square, Emma sits with a hot chocolate. She looks outside at the people hurrying past.

As the chorus begins, she sees someone standing across the square: her boyfriend, whom she hasn’t seen for months because he was working abroad.

He waves.

Emma can hardly believe it. She runs outside, while the song continues cheerfully. People laugh, snow begins to fall softly, and the music fills the square.

When they finally hug, the exact chorus sounds:

“All I want for Christmas… is you!”

They both laugh, because it seems as though the song is about exactly this moment. No expensive gifts, no big plans — just being together.
